Beating Post-Breakup Setbacks Like They Owe You Money

By Max Jancar | Published: September 23, 2024 | 2 Minute Read

As part of my newsletter, The Breakthrough Letter, every week I send out a short email with one idea, one suggestion, and one resource to help you break through your breakup and create a new possibility for love, either with your ex or someone new.

Here’s this week’s edition. Enjoy.

Today’s Idea:

Breakup recovery is seldom linear. You’ll have days where you feel like you’re making huge strides, and then suddenly, the pain pulls you right back in.

The same is true with attracting new love or re-attracting an ex. There will be moments when the person you fancy will seem cold, distant, confused, or even mean. There will be rejection, awkwardness, and uncomfortable conversations.

All of these things are normal and should be expected. They’re part of the process, not signs that all hope is lost.

Today’s Suggestion:

The next time you feel a sudden sting of grief; the next time you’re pissed off and “this close” to kicking your dog in the face; the next time a date rejects you or your ex ignores all seven of your dumb, sappy messages — do not overreact. Do not base your behavior on panic or neediness.

Instead, remind yourself all of this is just part of the process — that these setbacks are natural. That these things just happen. Then close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Try to let things go. See how it feels.

Ideally, after getting some distance from your emotions and fears, you can respond to these setbacks in a more tactful, thought-out, and effective way.

Today’s Resource:

Don’t Take The Stages Of Anything Too Seriously — a brief and to-the-point explanation of why recovery, attraction, and re-attraction are rarely linear and usually full of setbacks.

As always, feel free to reply to this email and let me know what you think. While I can’t respond to everyone, I do read everything.

Until next time,

Max Jancar
